Galactocele (Milk Retention Cyst)

Basics

  • Definition: Milk Filled Cyst
  • Cause: Obstructed Milk Duct

Presentation

  • Soft Cystic Masses
  • Usually Painless Unless Infected

Diagnosis

  • Initial Evaluation: US
  • Diagnosis: Aspiration (Milky/Creamy Fluid)

Treatment

  • Asymptomatic: Conservative Management (Warm Compress & Massage)
  • Symptomatic: Needle Aspiration
    • May Require Repeated Draining
    • May Require Surgical Excision if Repeatedly Fails
  • Continue Breastfeeding

Mammary Duct (Milk) Fistula

Basics

  • Definition: Connection Between Mammary Duct & Skin Surface
  • Most Common After Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA), Biopsy or Surgical Intervention While Breast Feeding
    • Higher Risk in Central Lesions than Peripheral Lesions

Presentation

  • Spontaneous Drainage of Milk from the Skin

Diagnosis

  • Clinical Diagnosis (Based on History & Physical)
  • US May Assist

Treatment

  • Stop Breast Feeding
