Hypoparathyroidism

  • Definition: Insufficient PTH Secretion
  • Can Cause Significant Hypocalcemia
  • Causes:
    • Postoperative from Thyroid or Parathyroid Surgery (Most Common)
      • Often Transient but Can Be Permanent
    • Autoimmune
    • Genetic
  • Diagnosis/Labs:
    • Low PTH
    • Low Calcium
    • High Phosphate
  • Treatment: Calcium & Vitamin D Supplementation
    • Recombinant Human PTH (rhPTH) May Assist in Long-Term Management of Chronic Disease

Pseudohypoparathyroidism

  • Definition: Hereditary Inadequate Response to PTH
    • Resistance Largely Occurs in the Kidneys
  • Mutations: GNAS or STX16
  • Albright Hereditary Osteodystrophy
    • A Group of Symptoms Associated with Pseudohypoparathyroidism
    • Presentation: Short Stature, Obese, Round Face & Brachydactyly (Shortened Digits)
  • More Common in Females (2:1)
  • Labs:
    • Low Calcium
    • High Phosphorous
    • High PTH
  • Treatment: Calcium & Vitamin D Supplementation
