Neurofibroma

Basics

  • Benign Proliferation of Nerve Sheaths
  • Include Schwann Cells, Fibroblasts, Perineural Cells & Mast Cells
  • Most are Solitary & Sporadic
  • Multiple Lesions Can Be Associated with Neurofibromatosis

Presentation

  • Soft Papules or Nodules
  • Skin-Colored or Hyperpigmented
  • Diameter < 2 cm
  • “Button-Hole” Sign – Lesions Retracts into the Skin When Direct Pressure is Applied

Diagnosis

  • Clinical (Based on History and Physical Exam)
  • May Require Skin Biopsy

Treatment

  • General Requires No Treatment
  • Consider Excision for Patient Preference (Cosmesis) or Concern for Malignancy
